What your cheekbones say about you

What your cheekbones say about you: Study shows brains make snap judgments on whether to trust a face ‘in a matter of milliseconds’
Our brains judge things like high cheekbones and eyebrows - before we even have the chance to consciously register them

The findings of a University of York study published last month

Scientists have discovered that our brains make snap judgments about strangers’ faces before we have even consciously registered them – giving a whole new meaning to the sense of a good “first impression”.

It has long been thought that high cheekbones and eyebrows signal trustworthiness, large eyes indicate attractiveness and a broad smile suggests approachability – but little was known about how or why our brains are wired to think this.
Now a study from a team of psychologists at New York University has revealed that such impressions are formed in “a matter of milliseconds” in the brain’s amygdala, a structure that is important for human social and emotional behaviour.

Scientists came up with a set of real and computer-generated faces that conformed to a certain set of preconceptions about which previous studies have been done.
They were shown to a group of test subjects and, as with previous studies, people strongly agreed on the level of trustworthiness conveyed by each face.
Afterwards a new group were shown the same images – but for just three hundredths of a second – 33 milliseconds – at a time.

This is not enough time for the conscious part of the brain to register what is going on – but brain scanner readings showed it was enough for the amygdala to respond – and in the same specific regions as with the first group.
“Our findings suggest that the brain automatically responds to a face’s trustworthiness before it is even consciously perceived,” explained Jonathan Freeman, an assistant professor at NYU’s Department of Psychology and the study’s senior author.
“The results are consistent with an extensive body of research suggesting that we form spontaneous judgments of other people that can be largely outside awareness.”
Freeman said the experiments they carried out gave further credence to the power of our hard-wiring to think that higher inner eyebrows and pronounced cheekbones are seen as trustworthy and lower inner eyebrows and shallower cheekbones are seen as untrustworthy.
And a University of York study last month provided further evidence that similar principles can be applied to other characteristics. Breaking down faces to their key constituent parts and shapes, they found that subjects nearly always identified large smiles with approachability.
Youthfulness and attractiveness were governed by the size and shape of our eyes and eyebrows, while the way the brain registered “dominance” was closely aligned with masculine facial structures.
Like others, though that study showed that there is really no correlation between these features and a person’s actual personality. And that’s perhaps not surprising, given just how quickly these judgments are made.
Freeman's study was published last night in the Journal of Neuroscience.

I think high cheekbones are beautiful and I love the complements, it makes me feel special. also people ask me a lot do I model. Some people even go to the extremes of having surgery to get high cheekbones, usually they come out looking foolish. the only way to get high cheekbones is to be born with them as I was.LOL
I do not doubt that you have native origins. As you have evidence, then it is true. But the high cheekbones and almond eyes are not evidence. Why? Because the majority of West Africans have high cheekbones and almond eyes. They also have longer legs relative to white people. African Americans have low cheekbones and round eyes because of the white genes.

volkswagen surpasses Toyota as world's largest automaker in first half of 2015

Volkswagen surpassed Toyota as the world's largest automaker in the first half of 2015, fulfilling a long-held goal, despite a sales slump in the U.S.
Volkswagen sold 5.04 million vehicles in the first six months of the year, edging Toyota's 5.02 million. General Motors, once the world's biggest automaker by a long shot, is now firmly entrenched in the No. 3 slot. It has not yet released its official first-half stats.
The title of world's largest automaker is largely a symbolic victory. But it does serve as an effective gauge of how global strategies are unfolding.
"It’s certainly bragging rights, and being able to communicate that they’re the largest automaker in the world is a powerful statement," said Tom Libby, an IHS Automotive analyst. "It’s certainly something they’re going to promote."
Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn has long wanted the company to seize the No. 1 spot by 2018, but a spokeswoman declined to plant a triumphant flag on the news.
"We do not comment on the figures of other automakers," Volkswagen spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan said in an email. "The goal of the Volkswagen Group is to focus on qualitative growth and not being No. 1 in sales."

Whether the German automaker can retain the No. 1 title for the full year is its next hurdle.
"They’ve been very aggressive and open about their desire to be No. 1, so it speaks to them executing their plan," Libby said.
Boosting volume has its benefits. It brings greater manufacturing scale, allowing the company to spread costs over a wider production footprint and thus bolster profits. But it can also take a toll on quality and profit margins, particularly if automakers raise incentives to give dealers a jolt.
"I think the race for volume is the wrong race. I think the race for profitability is the right race," AutoTrader.com analyst Michelle Krebs said. "So if I were running an automaker that’s the number I would be looking at. Because sales volume you can buy."
Volkswagen's ascension to the top spot is not a particularly devastating blow to Toyota, which remains immensely profitable and retains strong global market share.
Toyota's operating profit margin for its 2015 fiscal year, which ended March 31, was 10.1%, making the Japanese automaker the envy of the industry. Volkswagen's global operating profit margin was 6.3%.
"Sales volumes or being the largest global automaker has never been a goal for Toyota," Toyota spokesman Scott Vazin said in an email. "Our focus is on getting our products and services right for our customers and ensuring we are exceeding their needs and expectations. We congratulate VW on achieving its stated goal."
Despite Volkswagen’s global sales gains, it has struggled in the U.S. Industry experts say the namesake Volkswagen brand lacks enough selection and has lagged on quality in the world’s most lucrative car market.
U.S. sales of the Volkswagen brand fell 10% in 2014, despite a 5.9% gain in overall industry sales. For the first six months of 2015, Volkswagen brand sales fell 2.6%, compared to a 4.4% increase for the overall industry.
By contrast, U.S. sales for the Toyota brand rose 5.8% in 2014 and 5.2% for the first half of 2015.
In the 2015 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study, which examines new vehicles, Volkswagen's namesake brand ranked 24th out of 33 brands sold in the U.S.. The Toyota brand was 10th.
To be sure, though, the U.S. market has reflected one of Volkswagen's only significant slip-ups. The company has claimed the top spot in China, the world's largest vehicle market, and remains dominant in Europe.
AutoTrader.com's Krebs joked that the U.S. is like "an emerging market" to Volkswagen. which hasn't introduced new vehicles quickly enough in the U.S. and has failed to capitalize on the crossover movement.
"Volkswagen’s story in the U.S. is so different than their story globally," she said.
Still, the German automaker's global sales for the first half of 2015 fell 0.5% compared to the previous year, as tough economic conditions took a toll in foreign markets such as South America and Russia. The company's China sales fell 3.9% through June.
Toyota’s global sales fell 1.5% for the same period.

volkswagen US sales rise despite scandal

German carmaker Volkswagen increased sales in the US in October as the emissions scandal entangling the company mounts.
On Monday US regulators said an extra 800,000 cars had been identified as using devices that concealed emission levels during testing.
The carmaker sold 30,387 cars in October, a rise of 0.24% compared with the same month last year.
In a statement VW thanked its customers for "their patience and loyalty".
"Volkswagen is committed to making things right and actively working to restore trust," said Volkswagen America's chief operating officer Mark McNabb.
Sales of the company's Golf line increased 40.2% compared to October last year. The Jetta and the Beetle, though, both took hits with sales decreasing 41.5% and 34.1% respectively.
Other US car companies reported double digit gains. GM rose 16% and sales of Ford rose 13% in October.
Volkswagen sales have been down throughout the year, mostly driven by its poor performance in the sale of larger cars and trucks that are popular in the US. Year to date sales are down 2.19%.
In September the company stopped selling six diesel car models after US regulators uncovered software code designed to cheat emissions tests.
The affected models were:
•VW Jetta TDI (Model Years 2009 - 2015)
•VW Jetta SportWagen TDI (Model Years 2009-2014)
•VW Golf TDI (Model Years 2010-2015)
•VW Golf SportWagen TDI (Model Year 2015)
•VW Beetle TDI and VW Beetle Convertible TDI (Model Years 2012 - 2015)
•VW Passat TDI (Model Years 2012-2015)
Sales of the Touareg TDI - one of the few diesel cars Volkswagen was not ordered to stop selling - stood at 416 vehicles.
Volkswagen has replaced its chief executive and apologised to customers.
However, a new report from environmental regulators on Monday suggested the company used the emission-concealing software in more vehicles than previously uncovered.
"It's the intentional deceit that bothers consumers and Volkswagen hasn't laid out its plan for how it is going to fix this. They need to lay out a plan before they can begin to turn the corner," said Michelle Krebs senior analyst for AutoTrader.com.

Industry growth

Cheap fuel prices and the low cost of borrowing helped other US carmakers boost sales throughout the year.

Image caption Sales of GM's Chevrolet Crossovers were up 58% in October compared with the same month last year
Purchases of GM cars have been up for 24 months in a row. Sport utility vehicles and trucks were a major driver of this trend. October's increases have mostly been attributed to sales of Chevrolets, which were up 18% from last year.
Similarly Ford, which sold 213,938 vehicles in October, had a 12% increase in sales of its SUVs compared with 2014.
The demand for larger cars in the US was hurting VW even before the scandal.
"VW has been down for a couple years because they haven't had the right vehicles at the right price, at the right time. The market is screaming for sport utility vehicles and VW isn't dominating in that," said Ms Krebs.

japanese cars are crap comparing to german cars

German car is always ahead in mechanical technology over japanese cars..you can't compare japanese cars to german cars...I can't believe americans are this much stupid to think crap japanese cars are good car and german cars are about luxury?!? german cars are expensive and can be luxurious because is the best car mechanically!!! only ignorant stupid americans have wrong statistics..in all countries, german cars top in reliability and japanese cars can't sell..japanese cars are only popular in america and poor southeast asia....and you gotta consider japanese cars are a lot slower than german cars so less damage is done to japanese cars...but despite the fact, extremely fast 911 porsche never broken never never...slow japanese cars can't even beat porsche 911 in reliability...porsche 911 is the most reliable car in record...japanese cars are also very unstable in high speed, that car is shaking alot in high speed and handling is crap...they don't have technological capability to built a car with stable and excellent handling car...this is why japanese cars never beat german cars in WRC and other various automobile competition...only thing good about japanese car is it's cheap and for its price quality is okay...
